The Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania and the Saint Mary’s Board of Trustees have begun the process of seeking a qualified buyer to purchase and operate Saint Mary’s Home of Erie and our Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC). The proposed sale would include Saint Mary’s at Asbury Ridge, The Carriage Homes at Asbury Ridge, Carleton Court Apartments and Saint Mary’s corporate office building. At the same time, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania are also seeking a qualified buyer for their Community Living Center property.
While the ministry and mission of Saint Mary’s has endured over the years, it is not immune to the changing landscape of senior care across America and must adapt. The era of independent, stand-alone senior living facilities has passed. To be effective and sustainable, most facilities nationwide have had to join forces with other providers. The time has come for Saint Mary’s to do the same to ensure its long-term viability in the Erie community.
This decision to seek new ownership is a difficult but necessary action to ensure the needs of seniors in the community continue to be met through a provider who has the resources to invest in the future.
The current timeline for the sale is unknown as transfer of ownership can only occur following completion of all legal and regulatory steps once a proposal has been accepted and a deal negotiated. This could take several months. We are legally bound to confidentiality regarding interested parties or potential buyers. More information will be shared as details are finalized.
We understand there are many people affected by this decision and that these individuals may be concerned about how this will impact their future. We want to assure our residents, families, and employees that Saint Mary’s will continue to support each of them throughout this transition.
